First look: Behold the awesome trailer for ESPN's upcoming XFL documentary

Sports fans who appreciate the absurd rejoiced last month when ESPN announced it's making a "30 for 30" documentary about the short-lived XFL football league.

Now the film's first trailer is here — debuting right here, on Mashable — and it looks fantastic.

Take a look below at the initial trailer for This Was the XFL, which focuses on the ethos behind the league as well as the factors that contributed to its eventual downfall.

The XFL was co-founded in 2001 by World Wrestling Federation boss Vince McMahon — hence a WWF wrestler called The Rock introducing the league to fans in the trailer above.

The league lasted just one season before folding. We took a look here at some of the things that made it so legendary in sports lore — for better and worse.

This Was the XFL is directed by Charlie Ebersol and premieres Feb. 2 on ESPN. In the meantime, get your popcorn ready.
