Xiaomi's next flagship smartphone will not be based on the company's long-standing MIUI operating system.

Instead, the Xiaomi 14 series will be based on HyperOS, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun announced on X.

According to Android Authority, HyperOS is a new smartphone OS that combines Android and Xiaomi's self-developed Vela system.

Initially, HyperOS will launch on Chinese versions of Xiaomi phones. When asked whether HyperOS will be available internationally as well, Jun replied, "stay tuned."

Jun didn't share any details about what the new OS will look like, and we also don't have any details on the features. Jun did say that the underlying architecture was "completely rewritten," and that the new OS is "preparing a public base for the Internet of Everything for tens of billions of devices and tens of billions of connections in the future."

Xiaomi's Android-based, MIUI operating system has been powering the company's phones for 13 years. The latest version of the OS, MIUI 14, launched in December 2022 and is powering Xiaomi's current flagships including the Xiaomi 13 Pro.
