LOS ANGELES -- Sex and the City but for modern day high school students.

That's the idea behind YouTube Red's new release Foursome, Brian Robbins, CEO of AwesomenessTV, told Mashable.

"That was the jumping off point," he said of the series, which AwesomenessTV produced. "We really wanted to present an unsalted version of high school and talk about real issues and scenarios that come to life of today’s teens and their sexuality."

The show follows Andie (Jenn McAllister known on YouTube as JennxPenn), a sophomore who struggles with dating, largely because of her overprotective older brother Alec, played by Logan Paul. So, she turns to her three best friends to help her navigate the highs and lows of high school.

The storyline actually led to a lot of behind-the-scenes camaraderie.

"I didn't know any of the cast before shooting but we all bonded really quickly," McAllister, who also starred in digital film Bad Night (released in July 2015) told Mashable.

The cast filmed for about 12 hours per day, five days a week, she recalled. But even when not filming, they all hung out during their off time.

"It was weird because we all have similarities to our characters but we are all at the same time different," she said. "In some sense, it seemed like us in real life were kind of mirror images of our characters."

Friendship is at the core of the series, McAllister said, which is what drew her to the project in the first place.

That, and the comedic elements.

Paul, who was recently tapped to guest star in Freeform drama Stichers and was on the cover of AdWeek, felt the same.

"I auditioned for the role of Alec because I thought the scripts were hilarious," he told Mashable in an email interview. "I actually congratulated the writers when I first walked into my audition because I thought they did an amazing job."

The show launched on YouTube Red on Wednesday.
