Network president Sean Atkins tells Mashable that Efron's years traveling and genuine appreciation for all types of food made MTV excited about working with the actor on a project that'll mark a departure for Efron.
The untitled project will, he adds, be less Anthony Bourdain-esque and more of an exploration of subjects that interest Efron.
"It's not necessarily about the cuisine -- like, Oh, I ate pig guts or Wow, this is the best steak I've ever had. It's more about the cultural impact of food for our audience," he tells Mashable. "He's really passionate about it. He's so excited about it."
The show does not yet have a premiere date.
The announcement about the show was made during MTV's annual Upfront presentation to advertisers in New York City, where a host of other pickups were also revealed (including an Unplugged revival) and additional development deals were unveiled.
The development deals in particular included projects with big names like Pitbull (who's producing a Miami-based drama called 305), Drew Barrymore (working on a coming-of-age twin drama called Blooms) and John Legend (whose company, Get Lifted, is producing a comedic half-hour called It's the Real, from the hip-hop duo of the same name.)
Efron's Baywatch co-star Dwayne Johnson is also developing a half-hour comedy/talk show via his Seven Bucks Productions, called Greatest Movie Show of All Time, This Week.
