Zayn and Gigi Hadid have broken up and the future is bleak

Grab a box of tissues because the poster kids for young love have officially called it quits.

Former One Direction-er Zayn Malik and model Gigi Hadid have split up according to statements released by the former couple on social media in response to rumors that have been circulating thanks to Zayn's thirsty Instagram pics and some vague captions about lemons.

"Gigi and I had an incredibly meaningful, loving and fun relationship and I have a huge amount of respect and adoration for Gigi as a woman and a friend," he wrote in a note shared on Twitter on Tuesday.

"She has such an incredible soul. I'm grateful to all of our fans for respecting this difficult decision and our privacy at this time, we wish this news could have come fro us first," he explained. "We love you all."

Shortly after, Gigi released a statement on her own social media accounts.

"Breakup statements often seem impersonal because there is really no way to put into words what two people experience together over a few years," she wrote, "not only in the relationship, but in life in general. I'm forever grateful for the love, time, and life lessons that Z and I shared."

"I want nothing but the best for him and will continue to support him as a friend that I have immense respect and love for," she continued. "As for the future, whatever's meant to be will always be."

The Zigi era began back in November of 2015, and while they did have a brief split in 2016, they remained together through music videos, photoshoots with Vogue, and more. The couple were never shy about sharing selfies and shouting each other out on social media but they sadly don't seem to be following each other on social media anymore, which, well, makes sense.
