The next Legend of Zelda title, probably Nintendo's most anticipated title of 2016, has been pushed until 2017. It will now be released on both the Wii U and upcoming NX console.

This announcement was made during a Nintendo briefing to shareholders in Japan Wednesday morning, and Zelda's slide into 2017 was confirmed by financial statements.

The untitled Legend of Zelda game was shown briefly -- in a cinematic trailer -- to fans during its E3 2014 announcement. Since then, the game has been delayed twice. In March of last year, series producer Eiji Aonuma announced the game needed more work, and would ship during the holiday 2016 period.

Nintendo's financial briefing set the release date for codename NX -- Nintendo's hotly discussed next-generation system -- to March 2017. But the company said the NX would skip E3 this year, where it was expected to be first revealed. The Wall Street Journal's Takashi Mochizuki tweeted details from the briefing.

This gives Nintendo a rather light E3 lineup, and even lighter releases for the 2016 holiday. Based on its financial documents, the biggest titles for the 3DS handheld will be Pokémon Sun and Moon, and Paper Mario Color Splash for the Wii U.

Nintendo said it will pick another date to discuss the NX, which still hasn't been defined as a console or handheld system.
