Calling all space enthusiasts: Use planets to tell the time with this solar system watch
If you keep up with NASA at all, you'll know that they recently made a kind of huge discovery: Trappist-1, a solar system older than ours with seven Earth-sized planets. It's fine, I'm fine, everything is fine.
What better way to show this system some love than by...wearing it? Meet the Xeric Trappist-1 Moonphase, a watch created by space lovers that lets you tell time by using planets.
This Kickstarter project blew its funding goal out of the water, and for good reason. The timepiece is absolutely exquisite, modeled after what a trip to these new planets may look like, with each detail representing a piece of the hypothetical journey.
The grille over the face represents what the first glimpse of Trappist-1 might look like through the observatory deck of a spaceship. Oh, and the glass-like dome is actually made of Hesalite: a crystal material developed for NASA. No big deal.
Telling time on the Trappist-1 Moonphase is actually just like using a traditional watch — but more aesthetically pleasing. Similar to the hands on an analog watch, the inner planet shows the hour while the outer planet shows the minutes, all while orbiting around the central axis.
It's obviously dark in space, and Xeric took this into account with the Super-LumiNova display. The current moonphase is displayed and illuminated in the watch as well as the time-telling planets and decorative stars.
