Hillary Clinton conceded the presidential election to Donald Trump after a grinding, dispiriting and at times terrifying race between the former reality TV star and former secretary of state, according to NBC News and CNN.

Most of the polls going into Election Day showed a likely Clinton win, but as Tuesday evening progressed it dawned on the thousands gathered at Clinton’s victory rally in Manhattan as well as the world at large that the electorate was sending a shrill rebuke to the establishment.

Voters came out in large numbers for Trump, particularly white, working class, rural and suburban voters. Trump’s message that he was the candidate of change resonated with these voters from Florida to North Carolina to Ohio, all states Trump won that were expected to be close, if not in Clinton’s column.

The 2016 presidential election has been a long, arduous cycle, and, at times, a very dark one. As each state was called, we lit that state up using a Lite Brite, beaming red for Republican (Donald Trump) and blue for Democrat (Hillary Clinton).
