Your anniversary: The one date other than her birthday that you are absolutely required to remember, and the date that could absolutely put you in the doghouse if you forget.

While showing your love and appreciation year round is essential, tangible gifts are just nice — and anniversary gifts can be crucial to keeping the mystery and romance alive. Whether your sweetheart wants gadget gifts or something a bit different, we've got you covered.

The hard part: Being in a long term relationship means a lot of gifts over the years, and finding ways to keep gifts unique might start feeling difficult.

The easy part: Well, it's pretty much a given that the longer you've been together, the nicer the presents get. Plus, anniversaries come with loose guidelines to at least give you a push in the right direction. There will be a traditional theme and a modernised theme for each year (you've probably heard of older couples celebrating a silver or a gold anniversary) but some of them probably shouldn't be taken super literally. Just because your current anniversary's theme is wood does not mean your wife wants a hand-carved rocking chair.

The themes are pretty helpful in getting the creative juices flowing and steering clear of clichés, but where you may need a hand is turning those themes into something she'll actually want — don't worry, we're on top of it.

Of course, we'll throw in some non-themed gifts like an iPhone or laptop, because sometimes, proving that you've been listening to her complain about her old device is better than some mushy thing she didn't ask for. Either way, you're bound to have loads of ideas.

If you've been together for one year:

  • The traditional theme is paper, and the modern theme is clocks.

The first anniversary is big and new, and sets the precedent for how the rest will go. You get to have one of these every year for the rest of your life, and that is surely something to celebrate. Hitting the sweet spot is crucial here, but there's room to be a little less serious than you could be with more years under your belt.

If you've been together for 2-5 years

  • Two years: The traditional theme is cotton, the modern theme is china.

  • Three years: The traditional theme is leather, the modern theme is crystal and glass.

  • Four years: The traditional theme is fruits and flowers, the modern theme is appliances.

  • Five years: The traditional theme is wood, the modern theme is silverware.

If you've been together for 6-9 years

  • Six years: The traditional theme is sweets, and the modern theme is wood.

  • Seven years: The traditional theme is copper, and the modern theme is a desk set.

  • Eight years: The traditional theme is bronze, and the modern theme is linens and lace.

  • Nine years: The traditional theme is pottery, and the modern theme is leather.

More than 10 years

  • 10 years: The traditional theme is tin and the modern theme is diamond jewellery.

  • 11 years: The traditional theme is steel and the modern theme is fashion jewellery.

  • 12 years: The traditional theme is silk and linens and the modern theme is pearls.

  • 13 years: The traditional theme is lace and the modern theme is textiles and furs.

  • 14 years: The traditional theme is animal print and the modern theme is gold jewellery.

  • 15 years: The traditional theme is crystals and the modern theme is watches.

Ten years is the first double-digit anniversary, and that's a pretty big moment. While you've loved growing closer and making big life decisions together over the past decade, it's still a decade — and it might have you feeling a bit rusty. Perhaps a better idea for this milestone anniversary is to give your relationship a little facelift through glamorous gifts and spontaneous adventures.

If you've been together for more than 20 years

  • 20 years: The traditional theme is china and the modern theme is platinum.

  • 25 years: Both the traditional and modern themes are silver.

  • 30 years: Both the traditional and modern themes are pearl.

  • 40 years: Both the traditional and modern themes are ruby.

  • 50 years: Both the traditional and modern themes are gold.

  • 60 years: Both the traditional and modern themes are diamond.

Congrats — you two are killing it at the whole marriage thing (and that's a pretty big feat nowadays). But themes aside, when you've been married for 20 plus years, anything is on the table as long as it's lavish. Just shower that woman in diamonds, or anything that she's mentioned wanting but dubbed "too expensive." No amount of money can show her how you truly feel about her after all of those wonderful years together, but it sure does help.

Just need a regular, non-anniversary gift? Check out this guide on the best gifts for under £50.

Minimalistic watch

Best For The Practical Lady

MVMT watches are all over Instagram and will have your lady feeling like the classiest woman in the building. Designs are simple yet elegant and will match everything she owns, with faces ranging from mother of pearl, to chic marble, to matte black. The one pictured above is called Boulevard Sunset, but there are plenty of other options to complement her style.

Personalised star map

Best For The Nerdy Girl

And here's the "paper" theme: If you're looking for a gift you're sure she doesn't have, a personalised star map of your special day as a couple is a safe, super romantic bet. It could be the day you met, your wedding day, whatever you want. The artist will then create a canvas of how the night sky was positioned on that specific day, plus a romantic quote if you want.

Ring Video Doorbell

Best For The Paranoid Lady

For couples who have recently moved in together, it’s not unlikely for at least one partner to feel weird when the other person’s not home. If she’s the type to freak out when she’s alone and hears a noise (raises hand), the Ring Video Doorbell can give her some peace of mind. She can ask Alexa to see the camera whenever she wants, and she’ll get a notification when motion is detected at the door.

Initial cuff bracelet

Best For The Girl Not Big On Bling

The first anniversary may not require something loaded with diamonds, and some women prefer that. This cuff bracelet is simple yet elegant, featuring her initial to give it an extra touch of sincerity. She'll be over the moon that you took the time to find something personalised, and it's a staple piece that she can wear with any outfit. Bangles come in sterling silver or 14K gold-plated sterling silver.

Amazon Echo Show

Best Non-traditional One Year Gift

Superwomen who put more time into work or family than they do themselves deserve a sidekick, and the Echo Show is the device for the job. With the help of Alexa and the new 10-inch screen, she can make hands-free calls, get recipe videos, watch live TV, check news reports, organise her busy schedule, control your entire smart home, and more.

Comfortable undies

Best For The Lazy Lady

Speaking of cotton, what's more romantic than comfortable underwear? Calvin Klein is known for having insanely comfy undies, and these are no different. Available in a few colours, so you can't go wrong.

Furbo pet camera

Best For The Obsessive Pet Mum

If there's one thing she loves more than you, it's her fur baby — and you know she's thinking about that little guy every second that she's away. The Furbo is a two-way pet camera and app-operated treat dispenser that will allow her to watch, talk to, and fling treats at her pup or kitty when she's away. It also has a sensor to detect barking and warn her if there's an issue at home.

Antique jewellery box

Best For The Jewellery Junkie

The traditional theme for five years is wood, and any vintage loving gal will obsess over this antique-style wooden jewelry box that doubles as a piece of decor. This mini armoire is hand crafted from the finest quality mango wood, known for its durable nature and colour properties.

KitchenAid mixer

Best For The Aspiring Foodie

Any woman who can’t pass up a new Pinterest recipe (and insists on cooking for every family event) has definitely had her eye on one of these bad boys — they're the diamond necklaces of kitchen appliances. This robust, stable model has a durable full metal construction and a smooth, rounded design, giving her the power to make more of what you love.

iPhone XS Max

Best Non-traditional 2-5 Year Gift

This stunner speaks for itself. If she's an Apple person, there's no way she hasn't been eyeing the new iPhone XS — and doesn't she deserve an edge-to-edge retina display, a better camera for better selfies, and the best water resistance yet? She's gonna love you forever. We mean, she was going to anyway.

Chocolate fountain

Best For The Lady With A Sweet Tooth

The "box of chocolates" gift may sit squarely on the overdone cliché list, but a towering chocolate fountain is okay by us (and certainly nothing any previous boyfriends got for her). Her sweet tooth and the guests at her next party are about to be wowed. To really put things over the top, you could whip up some chocolate covered strawberries for her.

Designer leather bag

Best For The Lady With A Lot Of Stuff

When leather is a theme, we hear nothing but "luxury leather purse." If going to Louis Vuitton is too ambitious, a classic tote bag with gold accents from Coach is stylish enough for upscale occasions, but practical enough for everyday use

Digital picture frame

Best For The Nostalgic Lady

Every family has that one lady who documents everything. While it's near impossible to get enough regular frames to display nearly 10 years of memories, a digital picture frame will shift through all of her photos so that each has its time to shine. A sweet 8 GB of internal memory, a smartphone app, and Alexa compatibility make choosing the photo lineup seamless.

Silk sheet set

Best For The Lady Who's Always Tired

Talk about a romantic snuggle sesh. Absolutely fit for a queen, this silk sheet set takes any room from "eh" to elegant. This isn't that cheap fake stuff, either — real silk offers benefits like skin protection from bacteria, wrinkle and split end prevention, and temperature regulation for too-hot or too-cold nights. And since you share a bed with her, this is basically a gift for you, too.

MacBook Pro

Best Non-traditional 6-9 Year Gift

While some ladies might appreciate a new desk, a desk set-themed anniversary doesn't exactly make for heart eyes. But a brand MacBook Pro is another story — and hey, that sits on a desk. This model will have her drooling, complete with a high-res display, i5 processor, and Touch Bar for heightened productivity. Prices vary depending on specs.

Pair of diamond earrings

Best For The Centre Of Attention Lady

Show her that she's your queen with these diamond earrings that are truly fit for royalty. They add more pop than the traditional, barely-noticeable diamond stud, but are still subtle enough to be worn on the daily. She's about to be the most glamorous girl at work or among her friends — it's gonna be like showing off that engagement ring all over again.

Apple Watch Series 4

Best For The Tech Savvy Lady

Let's kick the watch theme up a notch with a badass Apple Watch. Not only does the new Series 4 look incredible with edge-to-edge display, but also ups the convenience factor more than ever before. With this piece of wrist candy, she can iMessage, get smartphone notifications, make payments, and more. It even doubles as a fitness tracker with a stellar heart rate monitor. Colour options include silver, pink, and black.

Designer luggage set

Best For The Spontaneous Lady

Foreshadowing for a celebratory couples getaway, perhaps? If traveling is an itch that's never fully scratched with her, give her first-class travels with a stylish three-piece luggage set from Steve Madden. There's a size for any destination or trip length, with 360-degree wheels to make navigating the airport painless. Plus, she'll have an easy time spotting her stuff at luggage claim.

Stainless steel refrigerator

Best For The Home Improvers

The kitchen is the "it" room in the house — and nothing ups its wow factor like some sleek, ultra modern appliances. Put a twist on the 11-year steel theme (and be extra as hell) with a Samsung stainless steel fridge — with a screen. Not only will it give your home and family gatherings a massive upgrade, but the digital Family Hub can help keep lists, schedules, and more organised.

Kindle Paperwhite

Best Non-traditional 10+ Year Gift

After 10 years of fancy gifts and vacations for anniversaries, reading in a bubble bath may just be the "me-time" form of relaxation that she's craving. The 2018 Kindle Paperwhite is an upgraded version of the best-selling last generation e-reader, now waterproof. Here, she can store all of her favourite titles on one light-as-air device while still getting the feeling of physical paper. Upon checkout, you can customise storage and cellular preferences.

Platinum-dipped rose

Best For The Hopeless Romantic

You've probably been through some tough stuff over the past two decades, making your relationship as strong and enduring as platinum. Staying on that theme, this is a real rose dipped in platinum. Colourful bouquets are pretty while they last, but eventually wilt. This is the rose that will stay with her forever, just like your love. Low-key mushy, high-key sweet.

Gold photo locket

Best For The Sentimental Lady

Gold jewellery is a must at some point in the relationship, but it's easy to get too generic. This locket in 14K gold relieves all worries about being bland, featuring floral accents to give it an antique look. To make it even more special, shrink some photos of you two and stick them inside.

Diamond necklace

Best For Any Bling-loving Lady

Cue the heart eye emoji: This diamond necklace is is elegantly crafted in 9K white gold for a rich tone and sparkle. It's a real looker — just like her — and is sure to make this anniversary the most memorable yet.

Smart TV

Best Non-traditional 20+ Year Gift

No forever home is complete without a fancy TV for movie nights, and it's an extra great gift if the movie-watching room is begging for an upgrade. A platinum screen would have fit the theme better, but OLED quality is a million times better. This high def 65-inch 4K smart TV from Samsung gives a cinema like feel, will keep her apps in one place, and has Bixby Voice for commands from the couch.
