Freedom comes at a price Ava DuVernay's 13th, a documentary about the imprisonment of African American men in the centuries since slavery was outlawed. The 13th amendment abolished slavery, but is it still alive in the prison system?

The 13th amendment of the constitution reads as follows: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.” DuVernay's documentary dives into the middle section of this law, in which imprisoned men are no longer subject to the laws against slavery.

With interviews and footage from real prisons, DuVernay delves into the business and morality of mass incarceration.

The film releases on Netflix Oct. 7 and premieres at the New York Film Festival on Sept. 30.
