They made their market in epic fantasy, but Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, alongside True Blood writer Alexander Woo, have made the jump to sci-fi for their latest series.

3 Body Problem, based on Liu Cixin's novel The Three-Body Problem (the first in his Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy), features a planet-wide mystery. Top scientists are mysteriously dying and people start seeing an ominous countdown timer hovering in mid-air. There is a lot to unpack in the trailer and some of it only flashes up briefly, but there are some striking shots of the night sky flickering on and off, a large shape moving through the clouds, and a giant ring hovering above Earth that creates a sudden blue flash.

Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Rosalind Chao, Liam Cunningham, Eiza González, Jess Hong, Marlo Kelly, Alex Sharp, Sea Shimooka, Zine Tseng, Saamer Usmani, Benedict Wong, and Jonathan Pryce star.

3 Body Problem is streaming on Netflix from March 21.
