Stepping into Mister Rogers' shoes was harder than it looks — even for Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks embodied Mister Rogers so beautifully in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood that he snagged an Oscar nomination for the role. But as this behind-the-scenes featurette shows, (literally) stepping into Fred Rogers' shoes wasn't always easy.

"You try to sing that song, and get out of a jacket, put on a zip-up sweater, change a pair of shoes," says Hanks. "It ain't easy to do, and Fred did not do it in one take."

But those goofs were part of the process for Rogers as well. "He didn't want it perfect," said Bill Isler, former president and CEO of The Fred Rogers Company. "He wanted children to know that nobody is perfect. Everybody makes mistakes."

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is available now on Digital and hits Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Feb. 18.
