One of the most famous anti-war novels of all time, Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front, is coming to the big screen and the small with Edward Berger’s much-anticipated film, with the full trailer out now.

Based on Remarque’s own experience in World War I, the book and Netflix film focuses on the recruitment and deployment of a group of young German soldiers on the Western Front, including protagonist Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer), Stanislaus ‘Kat’ Katczinsky (Albrecht Schuch), Albert Kropp (Aaron Hilmer), Franz Müller (Moritz Klaus), Tjaden Stackfleet (Edin Hasanovic), and Ludwig Behm (Adrian Grünewald). The sobering trailer features incredible cinematography framing horrific scenes of war and the race to peace negotiations by Matthias Erzberger (Daniel Brühl).

All Quiet on the Western Front is Germany’s entry for the 2023 Academy Awards and the first time the book has been adapted for the screen in German — several film versions have been made, the most famous is the 1930 movie directed by Lewis Milestone, who won an Oscar for it.

Having premiered at Toronto International Film Festival, All Quiet on the Western Front will be streaming on Netflix from Oct. 28.
