One of the New York City's most beloved members of the fashion community, New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham, died on Saturday.

In the coming hours and days you're likely to hear an outpouring of love and admiration directed at Cunningham, but unless you're a fashion professional or at least a hardcore fashion fan who followed his work in the Times, you might be wondering what all the fuss is about. Simply put, he was a vital lens into the true pulse of fashion on the streets of New York, accurately detailing emerging style trends and fashion faux pas.

However, unlike some fashion critics and photographers, Cunningham was known for his unflappable charm and good nature, always ready with a smile and encouraging word for even the newest would-be fashion star.

Nothing captured this more than the 2010 documentary about his life and work, Bill Cunningham New York. The film is available on streaming services like iTunes, but if you want a quick taste of just how rich and insightful the film is, you can watch a this short trailer (above).

If you've ever wanted to know what it takes to make it in the world of New York fashion, Cunningham's life on film is a great start.
