Seth Meyers breaks down how Trump's coronavirus lies have changed as crisis escalates

The Late Night team, like many of us, are still working from home as social distancing measures to stop the spread of coronavirus continue. So host Seth Meyers took to his attic on Wednesday to film "A Closer Look" at Trump's chaotic attempts to downplay the pandemic for his own political benefit.

"The lie that the coronavirus is just like the flu did obvious damage," Meyers pointed out. "Do you know how many people heard that and then repeated it? Even if you hated Donald Trump and knew not to trust a word he said, everyone had that one friend or relative on the text chain who said, 'Y'know, it's not going to be so bad! It's gonna be like the flu!'"

With infections, deaths, and projections for both still rising, especially in New York, Trump is now claiming that he's actually been taking it seriously this whole time, correcting his many very smart, totally real business-people friends who were saying it's like the flu.

"You're the one who said it was like the flu!" Meyers said, helpfully backed up by several minutes of footage from the past few weeks of Trump saying exactly that, repeatedly. "Those friends of yours were you."
