Stephen Colbert tears into Trump's 'death-positive' coronavirus plan

President Trump's announcement on Tuesday that he planned to wind down the administration's coronavirus task force earned him an immediate and entirely justifiable backlash, including a blast from Stephen Colbert on the Late Show. In response to millions of people screeching "You'll WHAT NOW?" in unison, Trump backflipped on Wednesday, saying he hadn't realised how "popular" the task force is.

"Turns out that people like people who want them to be alive," shrugged Colbert-as-Trump on Wednesday's show. "That one really caught me by surprise, because I'm dead inside."

Trump has also failed to strike a single empathetic note while discussing the loss of over 75,000 American lives to the virus so far. (His response to a question in an ABC interview about the death toll so far? "It is what it is.") And he's actively pushing for the nation to accept the staggering and preventable wave of deaths that experts say would be a direct result of "reopening" the country too soon, all for the sake of the electoral optics of a recovering economy.

"I'm struck by how calm and casually the president talks about the loss of human life," said Colbert. "It's like he's changed his reelection campaign from 'Keep America Great' to 'Kill Americans? Groovy!'"
