'The economy over human life': Stephen Colbert blasts Trump's self-centered coronavirus strategy

On Monday night's from-home monologue, Late Show host Stephen Colbert tackled a few lowlights of President Trump's approach to the coronavirus pandemic over the weekend. While over 23,000 Americans have already died from COVID-19, the president's focus has been on the effects that life-saving measures like social distancing and shutdowns are having on the economy. More specifically, he's been pushing back on the wild idea that it's more important to protect American lives right now than the American economy.

"Now, some people say that Trump values the economy over human life just to help his reelection, but I'm sure he's not thinking about himself here!" joked Colbert. "Remember, all his buildings are branded 'OTHER PEOPLE.'"

Trump is also trying to push for the U.S. to be reopened well before experts recommend. The president is now insisting that the same state governors who were on their own when they needed national leadership on shutdowns must now be overruled if they won't end those (again, life-saving) measures. All for the sake of getting the economy going again.

"Opening the country is not up to you, because you did not have the balls to shut the country down in the first place," said Colbert pointedly. "You were the one who said you were just a cheerleader — you put yourself on the sidelines."
