Donald Trump's already fired more people this year than he ever did on The Apprentice (you know, the reality show that he, the actual current president, used to host), and for stupider reasons. If you're an expert trying to help the federal government handle the coronavirus pandemic, you're constantly choosing between pissing off the president and ignoring the fact that he's actively endangering lives.
"It turns out the director of the lead federal agency searching for a coronavirus vaccine was fired, because of 'his concern about Trump's coronavirus treatment theory,'" said an incredulous Stephen Colbert on Thursday, quoting a CNBC report. "Evidently, Dr Trump is canning random medical experts because they disagree with his random notions of health."
(The doctor in question, Dr Rick Bright, was director of the Department of Health and Human Services’ Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority until Trump fired him, he says, for wanting to spend government money on evidence-based solutions rather than Trump's evidence-free thought bubbles. Which, in the last 24 hours, have including injecting disinfectant.)
Colbert's very good and beautiful dog Benny also made a cameo in Thursday's monologue, as the new head of the government's "day-to-day" coronavirus task force. Trust me, it makes about as much sense as anything does right now.
