"Have you ever loved someone?" asks the trailer for Joe Wright's Cyrano. The Atonement director helms this latest adaptation of Edmond Rostand's 19th-century play about a desperate romantic who believes himself unworthy of love.

Peter Dinklage plays Cyrano, as he did in a recent stage version of this musical, which was adapted and directed by Erica Schmidt. He is madly in love with Roxanne (Haley Bennett), who of course considers him a dear friend and nothing else. When Roxanne reveals her love for Christian (Kelvin Harrison, Jr.). Cyrano helps Christian woo her while his own heart slowly breaks.

Cyrano will play in select theaters starting Dec. 31.
