The 2024 presidential election campaign — which has been filled with both ridiculous and depressing moments — has ended, of course, with a row about garbage: specifically, Joe Biden appearing to call Donald Trump supporters "garbage" in response to an offensive "joke" about Puerto Rico made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at a recent Trump rally.

Trump's slightly confusing response? Don a hi-vis jacket and climb in a garbage truck for a photo op.

"OK so you dressed up as a garbage man because you say Biden called your supporters garbage, and you're saying they're not garbage, but you're taking out the garbage, which is someone else, but you won't tell us who it is, and also no-one should call anyone garbage, but you just did because you're the garbage man?" asks Daily Show host Ronnie Chieng in the clip above. "So in other words: the perfect metaphor."
