What would you do if you came across a notebook that could kill anyone in the world?

If you're the Nat Wolff in Death Note, you use it to turn yourself into a vengeful god, picking off criminals in the name of justice.

Especially if you've got an actual death god played by Willem Dafoe whispering in your ear about the rich possibilities of such power, and a twisted girlfriend played by Margaret Qualley egging you to go further and further.

Fortunately, this brat's reign of terror isn't going unchecked – Lakeith Stanfield plays a mysterious young detective who's put on the case.

Adam Wingard's movie is a live-action adaptation of a famous Japanese anime, and has already attracted criticism for its decision to move the setting to Seattle and fill out the cast with mostly white actors.

The director has defended his decision by (among other things) pointing out that The Departed did the same thing, but even he's acknowledged that he won't be able to change everyone's minds. In other words, expect this conversation to continue as we get closer to Death Note's release on August 25.
