Tuesday is the day when the whimsy of Elon Musk finally takes off.

The billionaire's SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket is launching from Cape Canaveral, Florida and within the powerful rocket is a cherry red Tesla Roadster that will, if the launch is successful, head straight toward Mars. Not a miniature model of the battery-powered vehicle, but a full-size sports car. For real.

Musk posted an animated video on Monday set to David Bowie's Life on Mars? showing the highly anticipated launch. A space dummy, Starman, in the driver seat will also make the journey and float with the vehicle through space for a long, long time.

With the red planet looming in the distance, it's going to be a magical moment -- that is, if the whole thing doesn't go up in flames.
