We're barely a day away from the finale of WandaVision, so it's a good moment to look back on a simpler time. A time when MCU/Disney+ series WandaVision was a cute sitcom pastiche with fun costumes and genre-nod guest stars, not a wrenching journey through grief and trauma — not to mention a return to waiting months for the next installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe mega-narrative. (Yes, Falcon & Winter Soldier starts on Disney+ in a few weeks, but Wanda's story will be picked up in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness next year.)
Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Wanda in the MCU, joined Jimmy Fallon via Zoom on Wednesday night for a journey through several decades of The Tonight Show, complete with throwback title sequences, gorgeous (Olsen) and terrible (Fallon) hairstyles, and, naturally, smoking.
Of course, stars didn't do Zoom interviews back in the day — so a Farrah-flicked, slightly blazed '70s Olsen naturally begins to wonder why they're in "these boxes". By the 90s, she's calling out Fallon's fake laugh track, reminding him he doesn't even have an audience. Is this trip through late night history being powered by his pandemic-era desperation to get back to normal? Maybe — but if you've kept up with WandaVision, you'll know there's always a more sinister force working behind the scenes.
If the show itself didn't have you sold on the Emmy-worthiness of Olsen's immersion in the comic stylings of previous decades, consider this extra proof that She Has The Range and would have been a star in any era. And if you just managed to get "Agatha All Along" out of your head... well, sorry.
(Olsen noted in the actual interview with Fallon that as she's currently in London filming Doctor Strange 2, she had Wanda's hair and makeup team with her to help with her looks for this bit — and confessed that as she couldn't venture out into locked-down London to thrift a costume, she's wearing a dish towel as a tube top in the '70s segment. Now that's chaos magic.)
