Does a father have to like his son?

It's an unsettling question that kicks off the trailer for Paramount's Fences, starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. The father in question is Troy (Washington), a former baseball player whose life is changed irreversibly after a wrongful criminal conviction. He works tirelessly to provide a better life for his son...but that doesn't mean he likes him.

Washington narrates the trailer as Troy, his voice shaking with emotion as he addresses son Cory (Jovan Adepo). In addition to starring in the film, Washington takes his third turn as a feature director (he also starred in both previous directing outings; Antwone Fisher and The Great Debaters).

August Wilson adapted the screenplay and wrote the original script, published in 1983. A 2010 revival of the play, also starring Washington and Davis, netted them both Tonys for their respective roles.

Fences releases in theaters on Christmas Day.
