The next big Final Fantasy game is tantalizingly close.

At the 2022 Game Awards, Square Enix showed off an action-packed trailer for Final Fantasy XVI. The next mainline single-player game in the series has a traditional fantasy setting, real-time action combat, and even a dog you can pet. Oh, and it's set in a world where countries wage war using Godzilla-sized versions of classic Final Fantasy summons like Ifrit and Bahamut.

This trailer gave us the best look yet at what kind of game this actually is, with shots of the hero Clive fighting with a full party, riding chocobos across a vast desert, and running around in a town. It looks like Final Fantasy, alright.

Final Fantasy XVI launches exclusively on PlayStation 5 on June 22, 2023.
