George R.R. Martin teases potential 'Game of Thrones' prequel, but don't freak out just yet

Game of Thrones may be winding down for two shorter final seasons, but the world of Westeros could spread far beyond that. In an interview following the 2016 Emmys, where Thrones won Best Drama for the second year running, A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin told reporters he has more than enough material for a prequel.

"With the end of the show in sight, have you guys given any serious thought to doing any kind of prequel series?" a reporter asked the show's producers.

"Well, I do have thousands of pages of fake history of everything that led up to Game of Thrones," Martin said after showrunner David Benioff beckoned him to the microphone. "So there's a wealth of material there and I'm still writing more."

Martin's appendices could provide Thrones with prequels or spinoffs, like the Harry Potter universe's upcoming Fantastic Beasts. But Martin knows his voracious fan base, many of whom tweeted fervently during the Emmys that he should instead be writing The Winds of Winter. The prequel is a possibility, but not a priority.

"At the moment we still have this show to finish and I still have two books to finish, so that's all speculation," Martin said.
