Anyone who's seen Normal People will know that Paul Mescal can act. But in God's Creatures, it looks like he'll be shedding his romantic image for something far less pleasant.

In the trailer above for Saela Davis and Anna Rose Holmer's drama, Mescal plays Brian, a young man returning to an Irish fishing village to stay with his mother, Aileen (Emily Watson), only for their quiet lives to be shattered by an accusation made against him by a neighbour, Sarah (Aisling Franciosi).

God's Creatures looks like a fairly grim exploration of motherhood, and wanting to believe the best about your children even if you secretly suspect they may have done something terrible.

God's Creatures is in theatres from Sept. 30.
