It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the Baby Groot we saw onscreen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was purely a CG confection. But it turns out there was a real Baby Groot on set during the making of the film.

By "real," of course, we don't mean an actual tiny talking tree – those don't exist in our reality, at least not that we know of. We're talking about a 10-inch maquette that stood in for the role of Groot during the shoot.

And just like the character he's modeled after, the on-set Groot is just the cutest freakin' thing in the galaxy.

A behind-the-scenes bonus feature shows the "real" Groot in action. Here he is throwing a grown man off a bridge, with the help of some puppeteers and stuntmen; there he is helpfully giving the camera crew something to focus on, and the actors something to emote at.

According to director James Gunn, though, what really makes Groot tick is the fact that – though he might look like a team player on set – he's "a bit of a jerk." Which is fine by us. When you're that achingly adorable, you don't need to be nice.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be available on Digital HD starring August 8 and Blu-ray starting August 22.
