Growing up in a predominantly white Ireland during the 1960s and 1970s had its challenges -- and often horrors -- but for #IamIrish founder Lorraine Maher, the spike in hate crimes following the results of the EU referendum reveals a sad truth: not that much has changed.

#IamIrish pays homage to this reality through an exhibition based out of the London Irish Centre. Born in the context of a post-Brexit world, Maher's project celebrates mixed race identity through portrait photography by challenging assumptions about what it means to be Irish.

The exhibition, which features the images of 25 mixed race Irish people, was launched in accordance with Black History Month. The photographs were all taken by Tracey Anderson.
