HBO's socially distanced satire 'Coastal Elites' gives online rants the star treatment

For good or for bad, pandemic entertainment is fully upon us.

On Monday, HBO dropped the first trailer for its upcoming movie Coastal Elites — a socially distanced satire from writer Paul Rudnick and director Jay Roach.

Starring Bette Midler, Sarah Paulson, Kaitlyn Dever, Issa Rae, Dan Levy, and a whole bunch of medium close-up shots filmed in nondescript locations, this take on the pandemic puts an excruciatingly topical spin on the mockumentary format. Think the comments section of any given political article meets The Office meets an apocalypse film meets a Twitter argument recapped on YouTube.

In the first footage, we see Coastal Elites' leads burn through subjects ranging from mass casualties and minority representation to social media and Trump...lots and lots of Trump.

Sure to cause plenty of fights, Coastal Elites premieres September 12 on HBO.
