Two words have been on everyone's lips since Nancy Pelosi made a formal announcement at the end of September: "impeachment inquiry".

How many steps are involved in the process of impeaching a president? Turns out, there's quite a few! Seth Meyers' Late Night team put together a fake commercial which — despite its decidedly average jokes — does a pretty good job of explaining what happens next.

"An impeachment inquiry is when Congress conducts an investigation to see if there's enough evidence of wrongdoing to warrant drawing up articles of impeachment — the first step in impeaching a president," one woman explains in the commercial.

"Some representatives in Congress think impeachment of the current president is justified because he's committed a high crime or misdemeanour — even if it's not a violation of a criminal statute," she continues.

So, what happens next? "Six house committees will investigate the allegations against the president and present their findings to the judiciary committee," she explains.

Is that it? Not quite...

"Then it moves to the Senate," the woman adds. "Then the Senate holds a trial."

The president could then be removed from office — but only as long as the Senate majority leader doesn't dismiss the entire thing. Watch the clip. You'll get it.
