In a bizarre turn of events, some members of a political party in India beat dogs to death to protest against stray dogs. Youth Front (Mani) party workers killed 10 dogs and hung the dead bodies on a pole as they paraded on the streets of Kottayam, a town in the southern Indian state of Kerala. The killing was part of their protest against Union Minister Maneka Gandhi, who has criticized the state government for reducing the population of stray dogs in the state.

There has been an increase in the number of attacks by stray dogs in Kerala, which calls itself "God's own country". Two women have been killed by dogs in last two months. The politicians were carrying pictures of kids who had been attacked by stray dogs. “If the situation continues like this, we will take law in our hands. We can’t be mute spectators anymore. Those who are speaking for strays are agents of the powerful vaccine lobby,” Youth Front state president Saji Manjakadambil told Hindustan Times.

They took dead bodies of the dogs to a post office and demanded the carcasses to be shipped to Gandhi. The politicians later added that they killed only “dangerous dogs” for the protest. A case against them has been reportedly registered by Kottayam West police for cruelty towards animals.
