James Van Der Beek plays Diplo in a new comedy and it's as weird as it sounds

All this time, we thought James Van Der Beek was an actor, but it turns out he's actually Diplo -- who knew?

The Beek from the Creek has a new role in Viceland's first fully scripted comedy series, What Would Diplo Do? which is described as a loving send-up of the electronic dance music scene in the vein of Louie and World Star Hip Hop crossed with This Is Spinal Tap.

Van Der Beek plays a fictional version of DJ superstar Diplo, showing the surreal life of a guy who can bring 60,000 people to their feet… but kind of sucks one-on-one. It's a concept that's so weird, it's actually kind of genius, especially for a guy who wasn't afraid to play a fictionalized version of himself on Don't Trust the B---- in Apt 23, who competed on a fictionalized version of Dancing with the Stars.

The comedy hits our screens August 3 at 9 p.m. on Viceland.
