Jimmy Kimmel's opening skit — which sees him packing up his office ready to flee the country — tells you all you need to know about how the late night host, who has frequently been at war with Donald Trump, feels about the 2024 election result.

But the mood of Jimmy Kimmel Live! turns serious in the monologue, when Kimmel stops making jokes and takes a moment to share his honest thoughts.

"Let's be honest, it was a terrible night last night. It was a terrible night for women, for children, for the hundreds of thousands of immigrants who make this country go," says the host, pausing as his voice cracks with emotion.

"For healthcare, for our climate, for science, for journalism, for justice, for free speech. It was a terrible night for poor people, for the middle class, for seniors who rely on social security, for our allies in Ukraine, for NATO, for the truth, for democracy, and decency, and it was a terrible night for everyone who voted against him, and guess what? It was a bad night for everyone who voted for him, too — you just don't realise it yet."

You can also watch how Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and Seth Meyers reacted to the election result.
