Julie Andrews says therapy saved her life during a very difficult time

Julie Andrews is a treasure of international proportions.

The Mary Poppins star talked to Stephen Colbert about how therapy helped her during a difficult period of her life.

"Sadly I separated from my lovely first husband and separations were always inevitable and the marriage was over and my head was so full of clutter and garbage," Andrews said.

She added that it was movie director Mike Nichols — who directed The Graduate, Silkwood, and Heartburn — who suggested she try therapy.

"I went and got into it and it saved my life in a way," she said. Colbert then asked Andrews why she chose to talk about her therapy experience. "The truth is, Stephen, why not?" she replied. "If it helps anybody else have the same idea.

"These days there's no harm in sharing it. I think everybody knows the great work it can do and anybody that is lucky enough to have it, afford it, and take advantage of it, I think it would be wonderful."
