Lightning strikes just metres from protagonists in Hollywood all time (see Freaky Friday or Back To The Future) but rarely do we see real-world footage of the scary cinematic plot device.

Scottish man Kris Owens was walking home during a thunderstorm in Byron Bay, Australia, on Tuesday -- recording himself lest nature strike him down.

At it almost did, when I thunderbolt came out of the sky and hit the ground right behind him.

"I was making my way home at around 2 a.m. when I was caught in the middle of an intense lightning storm," he told Storyful.

"Thinking it would be a good idea to record my possible death for my mum, I got my phone and started to record, and captured the footage."

Strangely, Owens barely reacted to the thunderbolt. Whether he was scared deep down, or is just a stone cold chiller, we may never know. We do know, that if we were in his shoes, there would be some shrill screaming going on.

While hindsight does make the whole thing seem a little funny, the severity of the storm system was intense. The same evening, 24-year-old American Sam Beattie died when struck by lightning 60 kilometres (37 miles) from where Owens filmed his walk home.

The south east of Queensland has been battered by severe and "very dangerous" thunderstorms over the past seven days, with some residents reporting hail the size of tennis balls, the ABC reported.
