The Comic-Con trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power starts out on a hopeful note. "We thought the war, at last, was ended," a voiceover tells us. "We thought our joys would be unending. We thought our light would never dim."

Well, Middle-earth, I've got bad news for you: The war is not, in fact, ended. Your light's about to get a whole lot dimmer, and it's all thanks to a little someone known as Sauron. Ever heard of him? You're about to!

The trailer gives us our first look at the blonde evildoer who is — presumably — Sauron (Anson Boon). "You have been told many lies of Middle-earth," he tells us. Sinister, for sure. In fact, the whole trailer has a darker tone than those previously released: Yes, there's a lot of talk of light overcoming darkness, but there are also scenes of the fall of Númenor, ominous visions of war, and many, many orcs. Balancing out the darkness are people like Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) — but will their efforts be enough?

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power premieres on Prime Video Sept. 2.
