Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa was awarded the Guinness World Record for "Largest wave surfed" on Saturday for tackling an 80-foot wave off the coast of Praia do Norte in Nazaré, Portugal. He rode the wave in November of last year, but the 38 year old was officially given the honor at an event in California held by the World Surf League.

Koxa took the Guinness World Record from American Garrett McNamara, who surfed a 78-foot wave back in 2011.

"This is the best day of my life," Koxa said at the event. "Thank you and keep believing your dreams guys."

According to the surfer, back in 2014 he had a near-death experience, which left him afraid to travel. Luckily, the surfer conquered his fear enough to ride the biggest wave ever recorded by Guinness.
