YouTuber tests whether sharks are more attracted to human or fish blood

It's probably fairly unlikely that you have access to sharks, a shark cage, and a large bucket of blood. But if you do happen to have all those things, you should still avoid trying this one at home.

In the video above, former NASA engineer turned YouTuber Mark Rober works with the Discovery Channel team for Shark Week to devise an experiment to test which substance sharks are more attracted to: fish blood or human blood. OK, so for obvious reasons, Rober uses cow blood as a substitute for human, but Rober assures us that "all mammal blood essentially smells the same to sharks" so the results will be unaffected.

Alongside marine biologist Luke Tipple, Rober heads to the Bahamas and uses a controlled experiment with three anchored surfboards to release the different blood types into the water in the same area but distanced from each other. They also release odorless seawater in the same way to test whether the surfboards themselves are targets of the sharks. Then they sit back with their filming drones and wait for the toothy beasts to show up.

The TL:DW version? Fish blood is way more attractive to sharks than mammal blood.

It's still worth sticking around to the end of the video, however, in order to watch Rober hopping into a shark cage for a fairly scary fish blood feeding frenzy. Yikes.
