On Sunday, the actor and playwright Sam Shepard passed away at the age of 73.

Matthew McConaughey heard the news for the first time on the red carpet for his new film The Dark Tower, when he was asked about his reaction to Shepard's passing by an AP reporter.

"I'm not going to trivialise that situation, I just heard about it for the first time," McConaughey says in the video, before going on to share a story from his time working with Shepard on Mud.

"He moved on today? Wow, we lost one of the great ones," McConaughey finishes.

"See you in the next one, Sam."
