Netflix has released a new trailer for the upcoming film May December, a drama examining the aftermath of a shocking tabloid scandal.

Directed by Carol director Todd Haynes, May December follows actor Elizabeth (Natalie Portman) as she travels to Georgia to research her next role. Her subject: Gracie (Julianne Moore), a woman who made headlines at 36 for her inappropriate relationship with a co-worker Joe (Charles Melton), who was in seventh grade at the time.

Twenty years after the scandal, which included a stint in prison, Joe and Gracie are married with children and eager for their perspectives on their story to be told. However, while Elizabeth is initially welcome to observe their lives, her probing questions and the unearthing of the past soon reveal deeper layers and complicated feelings regarding the decades-old events.

May December arrives in select theatres on Nov. 17, and will be released Dec. 1 on Netflix in the US and Canada.

UPDATE: Sep. 26, 2023, 4:18 p.m. EDT A previous version of this article mis-identified Joe as a student of Gracie's.
