Election twist we did not expect: Stephen Colbert is a friend of Donald and Melania Trump. So when Melania's Monday night speech at the Republican National Committee drew ire for lifting lines from Michelle Obama's speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention, Colbert stepped up.

"Personally, I don't think Mrs. Trump is to fault at all," Colbert said on Tuesday's Late Show. "I think her speechwriters are to blame, and yet no one has lost their jobs. If only there was someone in the Trump campaign who enjoyed firing people."

Colbert invited "Melania" -- actually Laura Benanti -- to the show to address the controversy in a speech that features more than a few familiar lines.
