"Nobody goes to Congress to impeach a president."

When Speaker Nancy Pelosi opened a formal impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump this September, general sentiment among many Americans was that it was about time.

Dissatisfaction with the Trump presidency has been consistently high, with many constituents wondering how he kept dodging consequences for his increasingly farcical antics. Yet Pelosi has been reticent to give the US the impeachment people were screaming for.

Now, Pelosi has appeared on Thursday night's episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to explain why she finally decided to make the move — and why she waited.

"I had said then, 'He's not worth impeaching because it's even going to divide the country further than he has already divided it,'" Pelosi told Colbert. "But this was something that you could not ignore."

Pelosi was, of course, referring to the now infamous phone call between Trump and Ukraine.

"In one conversation he undermined our national security... At the same time he jeopardised the integrity of our elections — the heart of our democracy. And in doing so, in my view, he possibly violated his oath of office: to protect, defend and preserve the Constitution of the United States."
