Netflix launches #FirstTimeISawMe to powerfully share why representation matters

It's an exciting time to be watching television, not least because we're seeing more and more representation of different ideas and communities. In a series of videos with the hashtag #FirstTimeISawMe, actors of color from Netflix share their experiences with visibility and representation and what it means to them as artists.

"My goal on a daily basis is to inspire people that are like me," says actor DeRon Howard. "I have to set a good example."

Howard and his costars from Dear White People talk about how grateful they are to have a show featuring varied, complex roles for black actors -- not only to give them good jobs, but to raise the bar for future shows.

"I want to continue to have the doors that have been opened for me -- I've gotta hold them for the next person behind me," says Logan Browning.

"I've had moments where people say 'You're pretty for a dark-skinned girl'," recalls Antoinette Robertson. "All that stuff has to stop, and I feel like the only way it's going to stop is if we empower the generation after us."

Dear White People is streaming on Netflix and working on a second season.
