In 1992, Marsha P. Johnson was found dead in New York's Hudson river. Her death wasn't investigated; it was classified as a suicide, but many believed it a murder. A new Netflix documentary, The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson, reopens the case by examining Johnson's life.
From Academy Award-nominated director and journalist David France (How to Survive A Plague), The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson goes back to the '70s, to Johnson's activism in the Stonewall Riots and with STAR. Violence is still an ongoing threat for the trans community, particularly trans women of color like Johnson, so her old friend Victoria Cruz revisits Johnson's life and how she may actually have died.
It premieres on Netflix October 6.
