The Oculus team frequently showcases the work of artist Goro Fujita using VR drawing app Quill. His most amazing VR work surfaced earlier this month with "Worlds In Worlds." The piece was a demonstration of how you can use Quill's "infinite canvas" to embed 3D drawings within larger 3D drawings to give the viewer a sense that they're traveling from one reality into another in terms of scale.
As amazing as that was, another user decided to test just how far Quill's canvas can be pushed, and the result is a mind-bending trip reminiscent of the layered dream worlds of Inception.
The nearly three-minute video takes us into a building in which a man is watching a television that contains a duplicate of his surroundings. The Quill user manages to push the app until it hits seven levels of embedded scenes, at which point "reality" begins to become unstable and lose resolution. If you've ever heard of Nick Bostrom's simulation theory and wondered what it might look like, this VR demo in Quill suddenly makes the idea a lot easier to grasp.
