Robert De Niro explains how they de-aged him for 'The Irishman'

If ever there was someone suited to playing a character whose age spans half a century over the course of one movie, it's Robert De Niro. The guy's already had plenty of practice literally transforming for a role, with Raging Bull, where he completely changed his physical appearance in order to portray boxer Jake LaMotta.

In Martin Scorcese's new movie The Irishman, though, he at least got a helping hand from technology.

"It took a lot of work to do," De Niro tells Jimmy Fallon in the clip above, with a rare chuckle. "I'm happy, because maybe it'll extend my career another 30 years."

Fallon proceeds to hold up stills that show a de-aged Robert De Niro playing alleged mafia hitman Frank Sheeran in his thirties — right the way through to an older De Niro playing the same guy in his eighties.

Apparently it required some dots on the face and a fair few cameras — but the result looks pretty amazing.
