Samantha Bee dives into the 'deep state' conspiracy
Watch Next

Samantha Bee's latest spotlight is on the Republican Party's fixation with the "deep state." News clips of Republican leaders and Sean Hannity discuss a "deep state bureaucracy," "deep state media" and "deep state forces" that are "out for blood."

This idea of shadow forces controlling the government is what Bee calls "one of the far-right -- and far-left's -- favorite conspiracy fever dreams." In reality, Bee explained, the closest thing we have to a deep state are government employees who want to stop Trump from running America over a cliff.

"The deep state is so deeply buried in its deepy deepness, Sean Hannity had to pull it from the depths of his ass," Bee said.

The segment explained the deep state as a concept that originated in Turkey and Egypt with resistance against authoritarian regimes. The "deep state," as Trump's advocates use it, applies to literally anyone who disagrees with him.

Later in the show, Bee interviewed Egyptian satirist Bassem Youssef, who was exiled from Egypt because of his comedy show, which reached 30 to 40 million people. Youssef repeatedly mocked the Egyptian government and delegitimized its leadership (his comedic timing is also excellent and he should be a regular correspondent).

Full Frontal with Samantha Bee airs Wednesdays on TBS.
