Samantha Bee: Criticizing black athletes' protests sets us back hundreds of years
Watch Next

Football and politics are at loggerheads right now, and Samantha Bee is ready to oblige with weekly sports coverage. Following Trump's tweets over the weekend and a rapid spread of people taking a knee in solidarity with the NFL and rejecting of racial violence, Bee and the Full Frontal team take a closer look at why the right is so outraged.

"You see what Trump's trying to do? Take a protest specifically about police brutality and pretend it's about 'The Star-Spangled Banner' and 'Oh say can you see'," Bee said.

The segment, full of Bee's stinging commentary aimed at misguided Trump supporters and Fox News talking heads, points out a number of things, including that the tradition of NFL players standing for the anthem only started in 2009.

"If an entire nation is gonna soil its jorts over a hallowed tradition it should at least be older than the Kanye-Swift feud," Bee said.

At its root, Bee reiterated, this is a racial issue. Even multi-millionaire players don't get a "get out of racism free" card (like Michael Bennett, James Blake, and LeBron James -- to name a few). A conversation in which white politicians and pundits express that black people should be grateful for their limited freedom sounds awfully familiar in the worst way.

Full Frontal with Samantha Bee airs Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. on TBS.
