'Incapable of absorbing reality': Seth Meyers blasts Trump's desire to end coronavirus lockdown early

"Some people were still holding out hope that when shit got serious Trump would get serious, when in reality it was clear he would just be shit," Late Night host Seth Meyers quipped on Thursday.

President Donald Trump has been pushing to quickly reopen the country despite the coronavirus continuing to pose a threat, stating that "when somebody's the president of the United States, the authority is total." It's a very "when the president does it it's not illegal" sort of line. It's also very wrong, as state governments already have individual authority to decide when and how they will reopen — an authority Trump erroneously claimed he would give them.

"He's like a boss who thinks he's being generous by telling his employees, 'Hey, when your shift ends tonight feel free to, you know, go home to your families or whatever,'" said Meyers. "'I give you the permission to do that.'"

Of course, despite Trump's self-proclaimed total authority, he famously didn't accept any responsibility for failures in the federal government's response to the coronavirus. Apparently for Trump, with great power comes no responsibility. He's like a terrible Spider-Man.

Meyers also took a shot at Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway, who accused the World Health Organisation of ineptitude because "this is COVID-19, not COVID-1." Trump announced earlier this week that the U.S. would be pulling funding from the organisation.

"Oh my god, you absurd lady Beavis," said an exasperated Meyers. "COVID-19 is named after the year it was discovered: 2019. There weren't 18 COVIDs before this one. You're confusing it with the Fast and Furious movies."
